Johnny Appleseed was most certainly real – while his story has been idealized, much of it is true and he was certainly a character. (For instance… he was a missionary of a variant strain of Christianity, he was an absolute animal-rights proponent even down to spiders and insects, and went shoeless almost year-round.)

Casey Jones the engineer was definitely real. He’s a big local hero in Jackson, TN.
