Interesting. I think we can add Pfizers uber-drug Viagra to the list too. I think it was originally intended to be used as a vasodialator / blood pressure medication of some kind. By sheer medical coincidence and scientific observation, an odd recurring phenomenon was noted in male patients enrolled in clinical studies by the scientific braintrust. Nylon is named for New York and London, where it was discovered almost simultaneously. Check out Trivial Pursuit.

Visine was discovered by accident as well. A researcher was working with boric acid when it splashed his face. He ran to the sink to wash, because it’s acid. When he looked in the mirror to be sure he got it all, he noticed one eye was bright white and the other was bloodshot. The boric acid solution had splashed in the eye that was white. Hence, an ocular solution and prank tool were born.

Anesthesia was discovered by Crawford Long in 1842. He is credited with the discovery which was first published in 1848 by The Southern Medical and Surgical Journal.

Also, another fun scientific screw up occurred with microwaves. Perry Spencer is credited with discovering the microwave oven when a chocolate bar in his pocket melted while he was working on a magnetron. He then repeated his results by cooking popcorn.

As to #1 What about Crawford W. Long. He used either after observing the same effects the Nitrous Oxide in 1842.
