I met Tony and Jerry at a dinner theatre in Indianapolis. It was a joy to shake their hands, get a smile, and get their autographs.

In one episode of Bewitched, Jimmy Mathers played a neighbour kid.

The kid that played Gilbert went on to become a reporter for NBC TV.

Also there's this funny shot at Shorpy.com, where they freeze frame on a letter Ward is reading. It has some humorous comments from the prop department.
Search for Leave it to Beaver.

"Unlike his TV brother, Tony Dow had no previous acting experience. A Junior Olympics diving champion, he went to his first audition at the request of the lifeguard who worked at the pool where he worked out. (The lifeguard was up for a role and needed an athletic youth who could dive off of cliffs to play his son.) That particular pilot didn’t sell, but the producers remembered Dow when they were casting the role of Beaver’s older brother, a high school jock who lettered in almost every sport."

Tony Dow was much younger than high school age at the beginning of the series. Clearly not a high school jock or junior olympics diving champion at the time he auditioned for the show.

I once had the distinct pleasure to be served milk and cookies at an NAB convention by Barbara Billingsly. She was the kindest, sweetest person of all the celebrities I have ever met. When I bring up, (somewhat frequently when I am in my pints) stars I have met, she is the top! Her role in Airplane! is the greatest playing-against-type in the history of Hollywood, and that includes Henry Fonda in OUTITW. I do adore that woman.

I saw Jerry Mathers ten years ago in a mall in Birmingham Alabama. He spoke to an audience of five about his diabetes. My brother meets famous people all the time. I have Jerry and Emo Phillips.

I liked how Ward kept a tight rein on the kids without having to strike them. He mentions in several episodes how he'd been smacked around after doing bad things as a child. I'm not anti-corporal punishment; it was just neat to see how a father could begin to "understand" his kids rather than just beat them for doing "wrong."
