Three-and-3/4-inch G.I. Joes have been keeping kids busy for over 25 years now. How well do you remember the names of the characters that let you enact countless imaginary battles as a child, though? Hope you can recall their names because, as we’ll never forget, knowing is half the battle.

Take the Quiz: Name That G.I. Joe

  1. Woo Hoo! 0%!
Oh well — at least I had fun making up the names. Also, one of them (Dr. Mindbender, maybe), looks a bit like what I imagine the star of a gay porn set in a biker bar would look like…. Somehow I think that’s not Hasbro was going for.

  2. 100%!! This one was right up my alley. I had all of those toys.

I agree with Lindsey’s assessment of Dr. Mindbender. I’d like to read an article about what these characters did after their military careers.

  3. Hey – I got all 14 right (old-school G.I. Joe fan here!), but I only got credit for 13 of them. (I guess because there’s no period after the “Dr.” in “Dr Mindbender.”

  4. Well I knew them all, but got 13/14.

FYI.. this seems like a bug (or you’re extra picky:)

    Your answer:
    dr mindbender
    Correct answer:
    Dr. Mindbender

  5. 14/14!! It probably helps that I have the entire run of the G.I. Joe comic book that Marvel put out in the 1980’s.

    Yooooo Joe!

  6. Ryan & Steve — Give yourselves perfect scores. Dr Mindbender (and Dr Mind Bender and Dr Mind-Bender) are now all on the list of acceptable answers. Sorry about that.

  7. 13/14. I didn’t have Alpine growin up. I panicked and put Road Block, even though that clearly wasn’t Road Block.

  8. I got the first two right. From there, we had Cobra Commander’s Flamboyant Cousin, Das Racoon, Dave From Accounting and a few other made up names.

  9. Ditto, EMStoveken. And I’m a child of the 80s who had GI Joes and Transformers made of metal. I got the first two, thought “Yeah, I’m rocking this”, couldn’t remember the next two, had no idea on the next three, and then just gave up. I admit it, it beat me.

  10. You make a good point, EMStoveken… Cobra needs cash to finance their plans, and money means accountants. Do they have their own in-house accounting team? Do they go with one of the Big Four? Personally I think they lurk outside CPA examinations and abduct the most confident looking test-takers and brainwash them into servitude. Or they just put out an RFP and wait for Ernst & Young, Deloitte & Toushe, and the rest fall all over themselves trying to land the engagement.

  11. I loved this quiz, don’t get me wrong, but there are so many versions of each single character it depends a lot on whether or not you had that particular version to get the question right.
For instance, the Cobra Commander I always remember had a silver metal mask with a blue suit. After that, I had another version of Cobra Commander that was all black with red lining, with CC wearing a black hood.
My favorite character has been and always will be Destro. Just because of the mask. Some people really like Snake Eyes, but I’m more a pirate fan than ninja.

  12. TBV:
If you’re not already, you should really be following Cobra Commander on Twitter.
He thinks a lot like you do about these sorts of things…

  13. Great quiz! 8/14, but it should’ve been 9/14–I put Battle Android Trooper, which is what B.A.T. stands for. Pulled Alpine out of I-don’t-know-where and got totally lucky on Tunnel Rat. How ’bout a Transformers version? Heck, there were enough G.I. Joes, version 2.0 couldn’t be too hard to throw together:)

  14. Thanks, SpaceMonkeyX. Will do! (Gosh, isn’t that something Space Ghost would say?!)
