Okay, I think I’m having a brain fart. I either TOTALLY don’t get the monkey shirt, or it’s just not something that I expected to see on Mental Floss. Please explain.

Mo Monkey Mo Problems is my favorite. You’ve probably heard the song. From Wikipedia:
“Mo Money Mo Problems” is the Grammy-nominated second single & tenth track on the first disc of the Notorious B.I.G. album, Life After Death. It features guest vocals from Mase and Sean “Puff Daddy” Combs. The instrumental contains a sample of the Diana Ross song “I’m Coming Out”. The refrain, sung by Kelly Price, goes “I don’t know what they want from me, it’s like the more money we come across, the more problems we see”.

Yeah, I remember that song. I just don’t understand the monkey part.
Let me see if I can explain where my brain went with this, without having a shower of hate comments rain down on me.
Is it just supposed to be funny because monkeys are funny, or does the monkey represent a person…or group of people??

Drop caps are what they use in Fairy Tale books, where the first letter of the story is all big and fancy.
Kind of like the shirt where the D is ginormous.

As you can see on the shirt, the more monkey you have, the problems are caused. Same with money. It’s simply a play on the song. King Kong is there as an example on why more monkey is more problems.

Um, hate to burst anyone’s bubble… but a Gorilla (king kong) is NOT a monkey. Period. Therefore, the shirt sucks AND is a travesty that it’s being sold through a website such as this one.

A gorilla is not a monkey. Period. Therefore, the shirt is dumb. Dumb is the opposite of mental floss. All shirts should therefore be burned and those who have purchased and wear them should be ridiculed.

Wow. Have to agree with “Steven Cayford” & “Steve” (same person?). King Kong is a gorilla and gorillas are not monkeys. In fact, gorillas are more like humans than they are monkeys!
As much as I love both monkeys and gorillas, this is an awful shirt, especially from a publication that prides itself on emphasizing intelligence.
The thing about mental_floss t-shirts is that, when we wear them, we show how clever we are, even if only a small group of people get the joke. Sadly, whoever chooses to wear the “Mo Monkey” shirt will be showing how ignorant they are.
Shame on you, mental_floss
(This is my first ever negative comment on this site… and I feel bad for leaving it… but it had to be said.)

Thanks, Heather Dawn, for explaining drop caps, and providing me with wisdom and (the opportunity for) growth– which, incidentally, are my ReCaptcha words. :)
