The idea that having children will make you happy is an illusion. However, the pursuit of happiness is not the only reason we reproduce. (via Metafilter)

The manliest way to love cats. It’s all fun and games until someone loses an eye, or becomes lunch.

Lucky’s Funeral. Who knew a flushing ceremony could be this adorable?

The monster inside my son. A mother confronts the terrifying capacity for violence in her autistic adult child. More horror stories are in the comments.

99 Seinfeld references in one poster ought to keep you busy for a while. If the original artist’s website comes back online, here’s a key.

A new meaning for the term hyperopia: not simple farsightedness, but the inability to enjoy the present because one is overly worried about the future. It can lead to regret about lost opportunities.

  1. At 4:40 Detroit time, the Seinfeld link does not seem to be working. Don’t tease me!

  2. Ah, the price of success. Luckily, I made a copy of the poster, so I have an alternate link now. But I didn’t copy the answers!

  3. The ‘Having Children’ article is a big load of bull$#!t. The reason people are not as happier having children, as noted over the last two decades, is because they are spending more time chasing after material crap instead of spending that time with their kids. They see their kids as an ‘added expense’. There are so many things wrong with this ‘research’ that I can’t go into it all, but I will say this: The author focuses on ‘monents’ of happiness like the ‘first smile’ and ‘college graduation’ like it is the only time we are ‘happy’ with our children. He is an idiot if he and the other ‘researches’ believe that garbage (which explains why his name does not appear in the current tournament on this awesome site).
In a salute to Friday’s story I’ll close by saying that when I get home from work I’m going to have several ‘monments of happiness’, just in one night, with my son….Playing MarioKart, teaching him (and probably the new Aussie puppy) a little bit more about the importance of properly holding a football while running, watch him (at three years old)say and sign Grace before dinner, then still have my time to go play D&D with my 30-something friends.
I would venture to say it is all about priorities……

  4. TXCherokee, I think that the article was just trying to say that having children doesn’t automatically make you a happier individual than someone without. The article also said that children don’t make you miserable either. It seems to be more about choice.

  5. am i the only person who couldn’t finish the autism story because i was crying?

  6. *because it made them cry.

    i’m sure i wasn’t loud enough to distub anyone else : )

  7. The artical about the darker side of autism was amazing. I truly believe that we do need more research and insight into this little talked about side of autism.
