I would like to invite you to my blog on my grandfather, Perley Swett, “The Hermit of Taylor Pond” I just started the blog to share his life. Quite a character, a real New Hampshire hermit, never had plumbing or electricity even though he lived until 1973. The Manfred GnÃ¤dinger geography is a bit off. Camelle is in Spain, not anywhere near Germany (though technically it _is_ south of Germany).

No, Kelly J, they’re both acceptable.

Pretty good. Only hermits I know are those who do so for the spirit stuff.

And a few fictional hermits who do so to protect whatever world lies beyond us. What? It’s just on TV.

He was unable to pay the doctor but instead **sneaked** into town and worked on his garden at night when no one would notice him.

Should that be “snuck” or have I been saying that wrong all these years? I am from NJ… we have a few weird ways of going about things : )

I’m not sure if he quite counts as a “hermit,” but I wanted to add Dick Proenneke to the list. He lived alone in a remote part of Alaska for 30 years in a log cabin he built by hand. He filmed himself making the cabin and it was later turned into a documentary called “Alone in the Wilderness” that has aired on PBS. It’s really pretty cool to track his progress as he builds the cabin. There aren’t a lot of people anymore with the knowledge, skill, and patience to do that.
