It's not that anyone from the industry is being arrogant about fixing the eras in the descriptions. It's just that some people don't see the film industry as a legitimate business. Each position has specific requirements and expectation. A grip should never move decor, thats art department. Some people believe that a grip is a lighten technician they're not. When one is a "grip" on a set that is required to move lights and set them up, the person that took on that job should label them selves as a lighten technician on their resume. The reason it's important to stick to your job is because every minute that goes over schedule equals money which is scarce

Yes - please don't forget the AD! I am also one and it is a very important job. Other than that though, pretty good job. I don't think nitpicking at the details of what grips or gaffers do is really necessary - it changes. No two projects are run the same way.

I love how this - pretty much accurate - article has brought out everyone who wants to brag about being in the film industry in the guise of offering helpful corrections based on their set's specific nuances. And wherever you go, grips are definitely worker bees.

Not to be rude but... some one who has never worked on a film set is not a good person to try and explain what the different jobs are.

Forgot the AD (Assistant Director), he's one of the most important people on the set, he runs the entire set and is suppossed to know exactly what's gonna happen, when and with who. I'm an AD, trust me it's a hard job, you gotta control a lot of factors and have to be basically the liason between the director and pretty much everyone. If something goes wrong on set, the AD is usually blamed.

Just a bit of un-substantiated background, but I've always heard that the Best Boy is called the Best Boy because back when lights were even more dangerous than they are now (carbon arcs, paddle connections anyone?) the best boy was the one in the lighting crew who still had all his fingers intact. So when a gaffer needed a key lighting adjustment done well he'd get his Best Boy to go up and make the correction safely and speedily.

Is this true? I don't care. I like the idea of it anyway.

Don't forget "Associate Producer", which is a title given to people who have nothing to do with the production artistically/technically/financially.

i.e. Director's girlfriends, to boost the ego of the lead actor etc.
