50 Things Every 18-Year-Old Should Know. I wish I had all this spelled out for me when I was young.

People talk about the “misconceptions” they had as children concerning sex and reproduction in the film Kinda Sutra. Cute and funny, but probably NSFW unless you wear headphones. (via Metafilter)

Tooth enamel is barely stronger than glass, but doesn’t shatter easily. The reason why may surprise you.

The Homemade Wall of Death, cobbled together from 850 recycled wooden pallets. It’s all fun and games until the inevitable wreck.

Susan Boyle surprised the crowd (and the judges) in the TV show Britain’s Got Talent. That’s what they get for judging a book by its cover.

Seven Places To Stay In Dubai (If You Stay In Dubai Seven Times). Good luck paying for it.
are you kidding me with that 50 Things Every 18 Year Old Should Know?
I will object right now to only one, to keep it simple:
22) It’s not enough to buy a gun and stick it in a drawer like a lucky talisman. You need to learn to use the gun.
Really? We should all buy and learn to use guns? God Help Us All.

Educated gun users are at least better than uneducated ones.

Whew! I’m going to turn 19 is less than a month, (hooray, I’ll be completely legal!) and I’m happy to say that I’ve covered 49 of those things to know- the one hold out is learning to use a gun. The only guns I intend to use are waterguns.
That woman on Britain’s Got Talent really is the most surprising! I was cheering after I watched it!

I was reading through the 50 Things Every 18 Year Old Should Know and thought, “This sounds pretty right wing.” I didn’t look at where the source of the list came from until #22 popped up.

It doesn’t matter on which side of the political spectrum you stand. The list had many very good points. I didn’t agree with all of them either, but I’ll share it with friends anyway.
Can’t we all just be independent?

Mat, I really don’t think the list was saying that we should all go out and get guns. It’s basically saying that if you are a gun owner, be a responsible one, and part of that responsibility is knowing how to use a gun. It’s not enough to just own one.

Shandi,I wondered if the point about the gun was metaphorical, but the list is extremely literal. So it literally promotes (educated) gun ownership. Maybe it’s because I’m Canadian, and will never understand the idea that there can be such a thing as ‘responsible gun ownership’, but I think it should instead read ‘don’t keep a gun in your house, you’re not a cowboy’.
