A flying car would be neat! But tons of governmental red tape to get through. I also think it would be more practical if it had VTOL, so no runways would be needed to take off or land. A compact hovercar would probably make more sense in many ways than a true "flying car".

I agree with the CFI on here, after flying for 3 years, hundreds of hours of training and safety classes, I dont really think a heavy car is going to fly well, but more important, we need the arogant drivers of the road in the air either!

As a flight instructor and commercial pilot, these fluffy news stories are a continued irritant.

The Sport pilot rating may indeed be the saving grace, but, FAA/AOPA statistics show that a pilot flying into clouds (fog) without instrument training and equipment has about 170 seconds to live before becoming disoriented. Get ready for that. Consider the crash in Oregon that killed a vacationing family on the ground because the pilot tried to get under a cloud layer descended to the surface.

Another problem has to do with legal authority. If you're flying over the freeway at 50' and operating recklessly, is it police juristiction, or the FAA (what are they gonna do, pull you over?) This is not something the NTSB, FAA, DOT or highway patrols want to think about.

Next, consider parts. Look at the tires on the average Cessna alone. A Cessna 172 has 160-180HP depending on the engine, requires over 30' of wingspan, and has three tiny wheels that could not possibly handle a pothole at highway speed, and a glorified lawnmower battery. Airplane parts must be lightweight, which translates to minimal durability or expensive, exotic parts and technology, and frequent replacement.

If flying cars were practical, Mr. Taylor's aircraft--which is now at the Boeing museum in Seattle--would have stood a much better chance of navigating FAA safety standards then than it possibly could today.

I would love to see some sort of flying car, but, I wish the media would stop reporting science fiction as if it were trivial to flip a switch and navigate an aircraft. The only thing the mainstream media seems to consider is cost and wow-value. In fact, many people have died because pilots put the cost of their airplane over the safety of themselves, their passengers and people on the ground.

If you're going to spend that much money on a flying car, you might as well just buy a small airplane.

I'm completely surprised that the Moller Sky Car isn't on this list:

This dingbat has been peddling the same vapor-ware for DECADES. I remember reading his propaganda in the '70s as a kid... and he's managed to continue duping investors for over 30 years.

Jim-
As I was doing my research for this story, MASK was on my mind the whole time. The SkyBike and the Sokol A400 also look like they could have been involved in the fight against VENOM.
