Each of this week’s Brain Games will involve the sport of Major League Baseball. We’ll do our best to keep it on the “casual fan” level so that most of you can participate; good luck!
Today’s Brain Game:
Using initials, the Minnesota Twins are “MT”
and the Los Angeles Dodgers are “LAD.”TWO PAIRS of Major League Baseball teams
share the same initials. Can you name them?
Here are the ANSWERS.
Â
TR = Tampa Rays and Texas Rangers

I was thinking the Rays as well, but their full name is the Tampa Bay Rays. Therefore there initials would be TBR according the the rules above.

I only got one :(
but the Rays would be TBR, not TR.

Also, Tampay Bay doesn’t actually even play in Tampa, they play in St Petersburg.

philadelphia phillies and pittsburgh pirates…. the other had to be the rays and rangers, although the rays actual team name is the tampa bay rays

so according to the rules, would the Angels then be LAAOA…seeing as how their full name is the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim?

Wow. I -totally- read that question wrong, and was trying to think of two pairs of teams that shared the same initials as the Twins and the Dodgers.

James – I was doing the exact same thing.

Actually…Tampa formally changed their name this year from Devil Rays to Rays. The Tampa Rays/Texas Rangers answer would be correct.

That’ll tech me to post before thinking it through…sorry..I’m an idiot.

Tampa may have officially changed their name from the “Devil Rays” to the “Rays”, but it still wouldnt match up with the Texas Rangers because they are not the Tampa Rays, they are the Tampa BAY Rays…hence it would be TBR and not TR. Therefore, the Rays/Rangers answer would not be correct.
You wouldn’t call other teams the Kansas Royals, the Louis Cardinals, New Yankees or Chicago Sox.

But there doesn’t exist a city named “Tampa Bay” — the only geographical feature that has that name is the body of water between Tampa and St. Pete. Therefore I hereby declare the “Bay” part of the name nullified!
/Sorry, I’m a sore loser

@Wilson,
If you’re going to go the route of taking the “bay” out of it because it’s a body of water and not a city, you’d still be wrong, because the Rays don’t play in Tampa, they play in St. Petersburg…making them the St. Petersberg Rays….or the Florida Rays (if you’re going to go the state route)…but not the Tampa Rays.
I’m curious to see what you would call the New England Patriots or the Carolina Panthers/Hurricanes…seeing as how there is no state or city that is called New England or Carolina (yes, there is a NORTH Carolina and SOUTH Carolina, but no Carolina). I guess we just need to change the names to the Foxbourough Patrionts, Charlotte Panthers, and Raleigh Hurricanes.
