It should be mentioned that Arbor Day started in Nebraska City, Nebraska--an area that was a grassland until Europeans moved there.

I grew up in Euless, a suburb of Ft. Worth, and host to Arbor Daze, one of the larger Arbor Day celebrations in the U.S.

And then Earth Day had to come and steal his thunder. Natch. Nebraska founds one holiday, and it is usurped. Ah well. I remember getting free seedlings in grade school in honor of Arbor Day. Several of them are still alive--kind of scraggly evergreens, but they were planted for a windbreak, so that's ok.

If you're near Nebraska City, NE (south of Omaha) the Arbor Day Farm is an interesting place to visit - the trails through the trees are pretty cool. There's also a really nice conference center (the Lied Center) with a good restaurant.
