Actually, Jonny, Beatrix Potter really did have a fancy rat--not rat terrier--named "Sammy." And "The Tale of Samuel Whiskers," really is dedicated to him. So I don't know if she could be said to have kept "rats," but she certainly kept at least one. Somehow I can only imagine she would have been horrified at the idea of keeping an animal specifically to kill other animals.

Beatrix Potter had a number of pets, both usual and unusual, and it is from observing them, as well as creatures in the wild, that she gained the knowledge of animals that served her so well in the drawing, painting, and writing of the stories she is remembered for. The original "Peter Rabbit" was one of her animal friends, as was the original "Benjamin Bunny."

I think this was a very interesting list. I seem to always choose jobs that are obscure and these certainly fit the bill.

"by Beatrix Potter is said to be related to her personal rat, one of Jack Black's progeny."

I believe should read "personal rat terrier...". I don't think she kept rats, but rather, a rat terrier to catch and kill them.
