I live in Louisville and used to live down the street from Churchill Downs. I have to say that if you are FROM here and still live here, the whole festival for the Derby(two weeks) makes for some big inconveniences. It was cool for the first 10 years or so, but after that it gets a little annoying. One year I was stuck in traffic for five hours trying to get around all the blocked off roads. I make it a point to stay home and have my own little party, which means a few friends and some brats and beer.

I can definitely understand the nostalgia. When I moved to Texas for a brief time, I missed the Derby excitement.

In college we used to sit on the veranda (well, fire escape), sip mint juleps, and call each other “Colonel” all day with occasional readings from the scripture du jour, (Hunter S. Thompson’s 1970 account from Scanlon’s Monthly).

for the past few years i have talked about doing a kentucky derby party. the ladies would wear fun hats, we’d drink mint juleps, place bets, play some croquet in the backyard, it would be awesome. every year it sneaks up on me though and i don’t get around to doing it. its become a running joke with friends – this year is my third annual kentucky derby party that wasn’t. im excited to learn about the burgoo though, i’ll put that in next years plan! (i should put it on my calendar now…)

Another good thing about the Mint Julip, besides its deliciousness, is that if you run out of Whiskey but have all the other indredients and some Rum, BAM, you can make a Mojito.

Thanks Ethan, you brought back some memories.
I was at the Derby in 1980 when Genuine Risk won. She was the second filly, and the first in 65 years, to win the Kentucky Derby. She was a 13-1 long shot and my friends and I each made some money that day.
When she passed away last August at 31 she was the oldest living Kentucky Derby winner.
We had a great time at the race. My friends and I drank a good share of those Mints Juleps ourselves.
