WebUrbanist has a gallery of early office computing scenes, complete with lots of punched cards, reel-to-reel tape, dumb terminals (with awesome Star Trek designs), and hot hot fashion. (Literally, the clothes look uncomfortably hot. And itchy.) Here are a few favorites:

  1. Don’t forget the old black&white movie Desk Set with Katherine Hepburn who was being replaced by a computer.

It would not let me put in the link but go to Google images and type in Katherine Hepburn Desk Set

  2. I’m so glad I wasn’t working during those days. Although I have to admit, as a Star Trek fan, those offices sure give the bridge-of-the-Enterprise vibe.

  3. I remember many of these. Actually we still have an office with the 1970′s Orange colored drawers. One of the options when buying mainframes in those days was colors; Harvest Gold, some kind of blue, green, and orange.

  4. My understanding is the clothes were warmer as the rooms themselves were A/C cold. Have you in a server room lately? You wish you were wearing a winter jacket sometimes.
