I think when it was built, the Eiffel Tower was the tallest building on Earth, until 1930, over 40 yrs as the reigning tower.  

Per Wikipedia, the Space Needle was the tallest structure west of the Mississippi when it was built.  

Those buildings scraped the sky.</description>
