Congratulations to Gregg, who offered the horizontally-symmetrical word DECIDED and was randomly chosen as the winner of yesterday’s MOM is WOW Contest. Gregg won matching T-shirts for himself and his mother; nice job!
On a personal note… I grew up in the South, where being a “mama’s boy” isn’t a bad thing. Sadly, my mother suffers from Lewy Body Dementia (a disease somewhat similar to Alzheimer’s) and doesn’t have much time left on this Earth. As I live several hundred miles away, I won’t be able to visit her this Mother’s Day, so I have a favor to ask of you. Instead of taking a few minutes to play a Brain Game, I humbly request that you use that time to do something nice for your mom. Yes, today. You don’t have to wait for Mother’s Day on Sunday. Call her on the phone, send her some flowers, take her to lunch, order her a subscription to your favorite magazine… whatever you like.
And it doesn’t matter if she’s your real mom. It could be your grandmother, or stepmother, your sister, your wife, or anyone else who served as your mom. Or even someone you know who’s just a great mom to her kid(s). It takes a special person to be a good mother, and it’s important that you let her know. Trust me.
When you’re done, please return here. If you’ve got a good story about your mom to share, feel free to do so in the comments. And be sure to enjoy the rest of today’s great posts on mentalfloss.com.
Until my 87-year-old mom gets back later today from the airport with her younger sister from their trip to visit their older brother (what a family!), I’ll just tell all of you that she’s my hero and offer this effort to “do something nice”:
To Sandy’s mom, who clearly qualifies as “someone… who’s just a great mom to (her) kids,” I offer a prayer for freedom from pain and the comfort in your heart that comes with being loved.
Happy Mother’s Day, folks.

Sandy–
As my mom and I both have to work on the actual Mom’s day this weekend, we celebrated that great holiday last weekend watching “17 Again” and eating excellent movie theater junk food fare! She’s worth every penny and I love her for all that she does for everyone else and expects so little in return (such as the last Coca-Cola in the refrigerator…house rule!)
Happy Mother’s Day to all you moms, present & future!

My mom has passed on, and not a day goes by that I don’t wish her back… be nice to your Mom! She’s not going to be around forever!
Also – I’m a great Mom, and I’ll tell you my secret – I remember what it’s like to be a kid, and treat my children accordingly.
Re motherhood, this is the most apt quote:
Elizabeth Stone: Making the decision to have a child is momentous. It is to decide forever to have your heart go walking around outside your body.
Happy Mother’s Day!!! I will be giving cards and flowers to my children’s Godmom, their Sunday school teacher (childless) and my mentor at work!

My mom is a wonderful, loving, generous and wise woman. The best. Here’s just one little example: When I was 14, my 3 older siblings were already off at college and it was just my little sister and I at home anymore. One day I made some petulant remark about there being a mothers day, a fathers day, a secretary day, etc, but there wasn’t any kids day. She replied that every day is kids day and I realised it was a bratty thing to say. (I was old enough to know better.) But a few days later, we came home from school to find a present for each of us. She declared it kids day because we were such good kids. We were so surprised and happy.

I had already talked to my mother and ordered her flowers prior to coming here for the Brain Game. Do I have to call her again?

I already have a card in the mail for her, with a cute, little puppy wearing a big flower. It says, “I bought you the sweetest card I could find…’cuz you’re the sweetest mom!” I predict some tears and laughter over its cuteness ;) My Mom is one of my favorite people. I agree that it takes a really special lady to be a wonderful Mom, and mine pretty much tops the list of awesome moms out there. I really aspire to be like her someday, when I have a family.
