  1. You still can’t beat the University of Nebraska’s checkered mascot history. The best of the rather extensive list of former nicknames are the Mankilling Mastadons and the Mighty Bugeaters.

  2. 9/12 – one of which is my Alma Mater – Elon. Per the school’s website, Fightin’ Christians was first used in 1922. Additionally, it lists June 1, 2000 as the official date of change to The Phoenix. It happens to coincide with when Elon made the jump to D-I athletics.
