Geo Prizm was a Toyota Corolla
Geo Metro was a Suzuki
Chevy Spectrum was an Izuzu

What about Pontiac and Oldsmobile as another commenter said?

Another nit to pick here: Crosley didn't start producing cars to compete with Volkswagen. Hitler's little Strength Through Joy Wagen had barely started production and he was a little too busy committing genocide and starting a World War to begin infesting the world with it.

And Uncle B, have you ever heard of the Oldsmobile? They had a spectacular V8capable of going a few hundred thousand miles with a little care and maintenance. Stop pushing the "America sucks" stereotype.

To the previous posters: Deloreans were built in Ireland. International Harvester is still in business. Nash was mentioned with AMC. Geo's were just rebadged Suzukis, Toyotas and Daewoos, not technically an American brand in my book. In the early 1900's there were about 2000 companies producing cars. It was similar to the Dotcom boom where many companies didn't survive except for a select few. I've owned an AMC Concord and two AMC Eagles. My daily driver is an 86 Eagle. Absolutely love it. Thanks for the article Greg.

If Geo made this list, then in a roundabout way, Pantera should have at least an honorable mention.

Come on, how about De Lorean Motor Company. It wasn't a big company but Back To The Future and some drug controversies have made it an eighties legend.

Owned a Ford "Pinto" Deathtrap! Sad to say was my last Ford product ever! Bought VW's and Volvo's after having my faith in Ford dashed by that rusty little fire-bomb with poor suspension! America's carpet baggers, corrupt sales folks, and sick corporatists killed the American cars! poisoned them with unreasonable model changes, planned obsolescence, pis poor workmanship, poor, short lived engines and gaudy styling adventures! City of Detroit lies in ruins today because the sales offices over-ruled the engineering folks and Americans were sold out to gas and oil interests with the gas-guzzlers. Look at the fine Asian cars available today! They steer clear of American profiteering and produce well engineered, high-Ni/Fe blocks in four bangers that go further, without re-building, spare transmissions, body patches, than any American V-8 ever went! How cum Yankee Doodle? Because you built crap and sold model changes in place of quality and sound engineering! That's why! Even Korea with the Hyundai is doing better than Detroit iron, goddammit! They are still in business too!

My first car was a red Geo Metro convertible. My second car was a yellow Geo Metro convertible with a spoiler. I should have bought another Geo Metro after that, but I bought a Mitsubishi. I would pay good money today for another one in good condition.

DB funny you should mention International Harvester, because they're another one missing from the list. They made a competitor the the Jeep called the Scout. They even had Jay Silverheels (Tonto) in TV ads saying his familiar line, "Head 'em up Scout!"

Jeep went thru several incarnations before winding up under Chrysler. I believe they started out as Willys Overland Motor.

And did Chrysler buy all of AMC, or just the Eagle line?
