I still find it amusing that The Smoking Gun once sent me a t-shirt for pointing out that when Jeb Bush's son put donuts on his ex-girlfriend's parents lawn (she'd wisely dumped him!) it really was Simpsons imitating life with the "Two Bad Neighbors" episode when Bush Senior spins out on Homer's front yard.

The episode where the Simpsons goes to Japan is also a subject of controversy, at least in Japan. In the episode Homer knocks the Emperor into water, and there is an unspoken rule in Japan about how the Emperor is portrayed. That episode never aired in Japan. I know you can buy the DVD sets in Japan, so it will be interesting to see if that episode is included in the boxed set

I'm very thankful my parents were insightful enough to let my brother and I watch The Simpsons from a young age. We didn't get all the jokes, but we learned a lot about so many topics, especially what it means to be a family (when it comes down to the line, you do the right thing by them).

I hate hearing how the Simpsons somehow can't compare to other TV families. What's all this stuff about the show being somehow less than the Waltons? Is it because The Simpsons are a more realistic portrait of what it means to be part of a family? Are people that scared of themselves?

Awesome article! One of the best I've read on Mental Floss in a while. And I'm not just saying that because I go to UCD!

Wasn't it after "Sunday, Cruddy Sunday" when Marge says they're not turning Catholic because three kids are enough?

Personally, when The Simpsons picks on things about me (from teaching at Florida State, teaching Simpsons classes, and, most recently, being a Norwad), I am flattered!

Nice work!

I thought the Fox v. Fox thing was just a publicity stunt or joke or something.

All the reruns I've seen of "Sunday Cruddy Sunday" kept the word "Catholic" in them. Maybe it differs from station to station.
