You see look at even some of these comments. People actually defending Socialism. They obviously are the ones who don’t even comprehend what it means. Socialism is when all wealth is DISTRIBUTED through Government. You may of course think that’s sounds great. BUT then what is the point of being innovative, determined and hard working if its only going to be taken. No one would want to be a manager, Doctor, Scientist, Engineer ect. BECAUSE NO ONE WILL WANT TO BE BECAUSE GOVERNMENT WILL ONLY TAKE YOUR EARNINGS. So thus progress will stop because people are no longer allowed to progress. You see thats what makes Socialism so dangerous because people cant seem to comprehend what it really means. GET IT.

Katie – absolutely agree. This morning I saw a pick-up truck with two bumper stickers: “Politicians are corrupt” and “Socialism Sucks.”
Granted on the first, but even that is a generalization. I wanted to get out and ask the driver how they know that socialism sucks. Do they even know what it means?

I’m glad ar16 said something re. Keller’s politics vs. her “sainthood”…

Her main political issues were women’s rights (including advocating for birth control and suffrage), rights for the disabled, pacifism, and child labor. And, apparently, wishing old ladies happy birthdays.

But oOoooOo communism is a scary word thanks to being co-opted by dictators, so we have to marginalize the entire philosophy any anyone who supports it.

All these stories of the communist “scare” always fail to mention that there indeed were many communist spies within the government during that era reaching to the highest level of government.

Sure, some overreaction caused some stupid accusations but the overall threat was very real and well documented.

I can understand why Lucille Ball was left out – while all of the above examples genuinely held some sort of left-wing views, she was signed up by her grandfather and her naming by HUAC was a bit of an anomaly.

Gene Kelly’s wife Betsy Blair, who died earlier this year, was apparently so heavily involved with the Communist movement that it was only the fact that she was married to a major star that saved her.

Wow I can’t believe you left off Lucille Ball. She was subpoenaed by the House Committee on Un-American Activities because she had registered to vote in the Communist party primary election in 1936 at her socialist grandfather’s insistence. Then Desi came out and said that “the only thing red about Lucy is her hair and that’s not legitimate.” Lucy then came out and got a standing ovation. I love that story.
