The play is the thing wherein Hamlet captured the conscience of the king. We’ve taken that concept and put a challenging _flossian spin on it. We’re not after your conscience (so relax); we’re after your knowledge of Shakespearean theatre. In this quiz, we’ll provide a Shakespeare character and ask you to choose the play in which he or she appears.

  1. Hate to be an annoyance, but Valentine was also the name of Mercutio’s brother in “Romeo and Juliet.” Granted, he never appeared on stage, but it could throw off your quiz a bit

  2. Only missed Jacques. What a pleasure, to have one’s BA in Theater be useful, even if it’s only for a moment!

  3. Wow, I can’t believe I missed Jacques . . . I just got back from Shakespeare in the Park, where they showed that very play. I blame the poor sound system, or my inattentiveness with names.

reCaptcha: bianca on (another of Shakespeare’s characters, I believe?)

  4. 58%- not so good, really, but it’s been years since I even looked at Shakespeare. Great quiz!

  5. Isn’t Portia also a character in Julius Caesar?

  6. About half way through this I realized that I had already taken this same quiz some months ago.
Oh well, I think I missed the same one (Jacques) again anyway.

@nutmeag: Bianca was the lover of Casio in Othello but I think she may have been in another play too?

Shakespeare uses the same names in different plays pretty often.

You’re right, Daphne, I just checked – wife of Brutus.

Potia in MOV is a much more prominent character though.
