Like Wally said, it’s not an acronym, which Kendall confirmed… “a word…” LSU is not a word, unless you were to pronounce it elsue… Acronyms are abbreviations, but abbreviations aren’t necessarily acronyms.

No, it’s an acronym.

Here’s the definition according to Merriam-Webster:

“a word (as NATO, radar, or laser) formed from the initial letter or letters of each of the successive parts or major parts of a compound term”

Louisiana State University = LSU

Great article. It really bums me out that this is such a fun and interesting site but there’s always THAT person who thinks they need to prove something. I wasn’t confused between LSU and Louisiana State. Enough with the arrogance.

Editing quibble:
In profiles 5 and 6, this article refers to Louisiana State University, calling it one time “Louisiana State” and the next simply “LSU.” It’s the same school, please refer to it consistently.

For the record, LSU’s Sports Information department prefers “LSU” over “Louisiana State” in written articles.
