The Late Movies: Wedding Proposals and Toasts Gone Wrong

People ask other people to marry them every day. But given the possibility — however remote — that the person you’re asking might say no, ask yourself this question when planning your proposal: How public do I want this to be? Here are a few videos of very public proposals gone wrong. Guys, feel the pain.

Another failed basketball court proposal. The announcer’s verdict: “he’ll probably get over it in 10 or 12 years.”

Even if she does say yes, you’re not out of the woods yet. There’s still plenty that could go wrong at the wedding and the reception. For instance, you could pick a best man who’s a terrible public speaker. I mean awful:

Your best man might give a really lame toast — but what ruins the reception is the drunken heckling he receives from the other guests afterward. Who spiked the punch?

And if those weren’t bad enough, here’s an (actually funny) America’s Funniest Home Videos-style compilation of everything else that could go wrong.

  1. Hey look at it this way…the Rockets were winning.

  2. Yeah, when the Mascot walks over because he feels sorry for you, you know you are at the bottom of the loser barrel!

  3. The worst I ever personally witnessed happened at Texas Tech during the annual Christmas light lighting ceremony. A guy who was in the ROTC color guard got his girlfriend up on stage during the big show and asked her to marry him. Her response is forever burned into my brain: “Let me think about it.”

Translation: I don’t want to marry you, but I also don’t want to publicly humiliate you either.

  4. Weren’t those proposals publicity stunts by the teams?

  5. Poor guy man! the mascot actually tries to comfort him! I can’t help to find it hilarious.

  6. Sad, embarrassing situations, but… I happen to be of the opinion (as is my husband), that the guy should not ask the girl to marry him until he is absolutely sure of the answer, emotionally prepared to marry her that day, and if it’s to be a public proposal, certain that she’s into that kind of thing.

  7. I have commented on this like a million times on every site that posts it bc it annoys me so much that it keeps making the rounds – but the second one is totally staged. A lot of the “proposal fail” ones are. Can people seriously not tell when the see poorly trained actors at work? ha.

  8. Not exactly a proposal but similar.

December 1935 – Frank and Clara meet through mutual friends and go on a date. At the end of the date Frank walks Clara to her door, and as part of the ‘Good Night’ he asks, “So, is there going to be a second date?” Clara’s response was, “NOT if I can help it!” Something changed her mind because they married in October 1936. Were still married when Frank died in 1991 (Clara in 2002). They were my grandparents.
