To address the nit-pickers (yes, I mean *you*, Mr. Baker), the “official” term for the conflict — at least as far as the US government is concerned — is “The War of the Rebellion”.

I used to work at our local public library which was also an official US Government Document Depository. At that time we had a full set of the bound volumes mentioned in the link, kept in a special, limited-access area.

The Hunley was recovered, NOT the Alligator. Interestingly, the Hunley was excavated in part by a group of volunteers from NUMA, who, as all Clive Cussler fans know, is the agency Dirk Pitt and Steve Austin work for. Cussler was among the volunteers who helped excavate it. For those who don’t know of Clive Cussler, his Dirk Pitt and Steve Austin books are great summer reading. I’d describe them as Jacques Cousteau meets James Bond with a time machine.

Have the women who fought in the Civil War (and others) ever been recognized or is the American military and government still pretending only “of age” straight men participated in skirmishes?

The fact that anyone, anywhere still believes in discrimination of any sort based on the superficiality of gender, race or sexuality, etc is unbelievable. It’s time for an evolution of mindset in humans.

The term “civil war” refers to any war between belligerents who are part of the same nation. Some civil wars are fights for control of a central government; others are fought for other goals, such as the dissolution of the nation-state (“independence”).

You revisionists already know this; you falsely claim that the US Civil War was not a “civil war” because you want to advance the notion that the southern and northern states were not genuinely part of the same nation after secession.

You revisionists are intellectually dishonest, and guilty of sympathy for a treasonous rebellion; you deserve our contempt.

A civil war implies two sides fighting for control of one government. See Spanish Civil War (1936-1939), English Civil War (1641-1651), or Russian Civil War (1917-1923) for examples.

You can call it “The War Between the States”, “The Southern Rebellion”, “The War for Southern Independence”, “The War For Secession”, or any other names and it will be accurate. Calling it a “civil war” is not appropriate terminology.
