Thaddeus Lowe’s balloons were hydrogen balloons not hot air balloons.

The balloons flown by Thaddeus Lowe and the Balloon Corps (and also on the Confederate side) were GAS balloons, filled with hydrogen, or “town gas” from the municipal gas supply, not hot air. See “War of the Aeronauts” for an in-depth story of the use of spotting balloons on both sides of the war.

There were 2,108 Union soldiers killed at Antietam…not 12,000. The term “casualties” includes killed, wounded, missing and captured.

12,401 total Union casualties
2,108 killed
9,540 wounded
753 captured/missing

At first Lincoln tried to save the Union by preserving slavery. He got Congress to pass an amendment to the US Constitution which would have prohibited any federal law or further constitutional amendment barring slavery. Only Illinois ratified it. One wonders why the seceding states didn’t ratify this amendment.
