My son and I went to Cub Scout camp this weekend and with the formal raising and lowering of the flag each day, I was going to send a question about why they fold the flag the way they do.

The Army and Navy have two different ways of folding the US Flag. The Army doesn't tuck their flag into itself, the Navy does. Either way it resembles a cocked hat with no red displayed.

The mis-display of the America Flag is also a pet peeve of mine. You can read the entire flag code on the American Legion Website at legion.org

In item #7 it is stated that "It became a song when Key’s brother-in-law discovered that the poem perfectly fit the tune of a popular song called “The Anacreontic Song.”"

I believe the actual title of the original music is "To Anachreon in Heaven".

Interesting story about Mr. Heft and the 50 star flag. There is a similar story about the Vietnam Memorial. The designer submitted her idea as part of a class project in college and received a B and criticism from her instructor. When the designs were actually submitted to the Memorial Committee, the college instructor submitted a design as well. The instructor's design was never made it past the preliminary round of design consideration.

who would have thought Ripley suggested the anthem? an entertainer pointing out the lack of a national anthem (a symbol of patriotism) caused the birth of the anthem?

Don't feel bad about your 90's flag shirt. It probably wasn't a flag. While it's disrespectful to wear the flag on clothes or make it into clothing, the rule doesn't apply to things that are just starred and striped and meant to be in the spirit of the flag. So unless your shirt was specifically made of the flag cut up and fashioned into a shirt (as a few of the ones on sixties protesters deliberately were), it was fine. Think of the bunting on parade floats and podiums, though it's flaglike, in that it's red, white, and blue and has stars and stripes, it's not arranged right to be an actual flag or made from actual flags. So it's okay for it to be decor and to not stay in line with the rules of real flag etiquette.

People improperly displaying the flag is a bit of a pet peeve of mine. If you can't display it properly, don't bother with displaying it. The VFW came and taught classes about proper flag use when I was in junior high. I wish it was something taught in ever school, but my husband says it wasn't taught in his.
