Patrick – The Dead Alive is actually the primary resource I found for the Boorn Brothers’ case. The book is (mostly) available for free on Google Books. Also, there was a reissue of The Dead Alive in 2000 that presents the semi-fictional book with the actual court transcripts from the case, comparing the fact and fiction. It was really fascinating to see.

Kate – Thanks for filling in the blank as much as possible on the Natasha Ryan case. Definitely makes you wonder what happened between that girl and her mom to create such animosity.

Natasha Ryan has always maintained that she will never tell why she ran away from home, saying that both she and her mother know the reason.
I remember that there were reports of her being depressed and that she thought she may have been pregnant at the time of her disappearance. Surely her parents wouldn’t approve of that!

Any one familiar with the West Memphis Three case? They’ve been in jail for over 16 years now on trumped up charges. Definitely an interesting story worth checking out.

The Boorn case is nicely told in the Wilkie Collins book, The Dead Alive, which may be the first true-crime thriller.

In all my research, nothing ever specifically said why Natasha hid from her parents. I think Ginny and Melissa are correct – that it was Natasha’s parents disapproving of the relationship – but there was never any mention of why they disapproved exactly. Maybe one of our Aussie readers can fill in the details if they recall.

I’d guess it’s because she wanted to live with the boyfriend and her parents didn’t approve of their 14 year old little girl moving out of home and moving in with her boyfriend. Running away from home, dropping out of school, and living with your boyfriend (especially if your parents don’t approve of the boyfriend)seems very appealing and very romantic in a Romeo and Juliet sort of way to a lot of teenage girls. Most girls just come to their senses before they actually run off. Most girls aren’t heartless enough to let their mothers be devastated at them being missing. When I was about her age, I considered running off to be with my boyfriend, but came to my senses. I wasn’t heartless enough to let my mother go through the pain of thinking I was missing.
