My daughter Charlotte is a huge fan of Mo Willems, especially his ‘Pigeon’ series. Well, I guess it’s my wife and I who are the huge fans, since Charlotte’s not yet one and generally tolerant of whatever we read her. But if you can’t get enough Mo, let’s see if you can name all six books starring the Pigeon in three minutes.
That makes two mental_floss staffers who are big fans of the Pigeon series. My daughter really wants to let him drive the bus.

Mo! We love Mo here at our place. Got our first book at Comic Con in NY this year, where Mo was signing books, and haven’t looked back. Atm we own all the Pigeon books except The Pigeon has Feelings too, all the Piggie & Elephant (the new one came out just the other day and yep, already have it), both Knuffle Bunny books, Edwina, and his Naked Mole Rat book as well. Still need Leonardo, but that’s next on the list.
My 4 1/2 year old ADORES the books, and frankly, has expanded his sight word vocabulary incredibly thanx to the Pigeon, Piggie and Gerald. We take turns reading the characters lines and I have caught him after lights out with a flashlight and one of Mo’s books under his blanket. And I have to admit, I let him get away with it *grin*

Try The Gruffalo by Julia Donaldson – it has a great rhythm – is fun and funny.
Also, I highly recommend a resource book called Baby Read-Aloud Basics by Blakemore and Ramirez.
I love Mo Willems’ Piggie & Elephant series. Just read Watch Me Throw the Ball!

Woops! I meant to post The Gruffalo entry on the ‘recommend a book’ page.

My son, Henry, is only 5 months old so he doesn’t really have favorite books yet, but my husband and I are soooo hooked on anything Mo Willems. And we got Henry a stuffed pigeon that yells “Let me drive the bus!”
