Brain Game: The Lineup Card

Logic puzzle aficionados may be able to solve this one in their heads; the rest of us may need pencil and paper (or at least an open spreadsheet). Good luck!

The manager of a baseball team sat in the dugout before a game, filling out his lineup card. He liked to place his four best hitters in the first four slots in the order, and those players were named Adams, Berry, Colon and Davis. Based on the following two clues, can you determine which player batted in which order?

Clue #1. Davis batted sometime after Berry,
who did not lead off.

Clue #2. Colon batted just before Adams.

Here is the SOLUTION.

  1. Horray!

  2. Love the logic puzzles!

  3. I solved this one in my head, which is scary because I am usually not good at these types of puzzles.

    Thanks Sandy.

  4. I agree, this one was unusually easy for me. I thought I had to be missing something.

  5. This one was too ridiculously easy.

  6. Nice puzzle to warm up on.

On a side not, what parent is mean enough to name their kid Colon?

  7. Me too! I rarely get the logic puzzles… especially so quickly. I was sure I had made an error (har har!) somewhere.

  8. Got to love those logic puzzles, easy or not! I love it when I can add a little excitement to an as yet uneventful day! :)

@Nestor: I had a similar thought about the name Colon, but as I was writing out the names, I surmised that Sandy was giving us the last names of the players.

  9. Carolyn, you’re right; I was going for last names. There seem to be a handful of past and present baseballers who have that last name. I considered using a different one, but I think I just wondered if the subject would come up in the comments. Now I know!
