I have a very special, long-traveling dog too! She was a stray living on the streets of Beirut when she was rescued by a Lebanese animal sanctuary. I read her story online and adopted her! She's the greatest dog ever! I don't know how many frequent flier miles she has accumulated going from Lebanon to London to Utah and then finally to Florida. If you want a heartwarming story, you can read about this amazing dog by doing a Google search on "A Cadre for Claudine".

Not to steal any thunder from Maj Dennis, but I was on one of the fellow teams that was deployed at the same time. 2 Marines from my team managed to get 7 dogs home to SoCal, through alot of redtape and hookups through local contractors operating in the area. Very tough to do as the current order at the time was for the Marines NOT to get attached to the stray dogs and take them in. Kudo's to him, and my teammates. The dogs would have had a very rough life otherwise.

"But the major received orders to get rid of the dog within four days or he would be shot."

Oh man - Major Dennis would be SHOT if he didn't get rid of the dog?!?!?!?

Gotta love pronouns ...

@ Chris - Not sure if you were being facetious or not but I believe you are referring to the 1993 movie "Homeward Bound" a remake of a 1963 Disney movie based on the novel "The Incredible Journey" by Sheila Burnford. The story is not based on any factual account, though the novel was written in a more realistic manner than the movie, which granted the animals the ability to speak. Shadow, Chance, and Sassy were voiced by Don Ameche, Michael J. Fox, and Sally Field, respectively.

PS: Any chance reCAPTCHA might be translating mental_floss articles?? I got my new issue in the mail yesterday and read the scatterbrained section about spices. My reCAPTCHA is McCormick ribbing! Coincidence?

I donated money to a cause to bring a dog from Afghanistan to the United States. I just received an update that the dog has successfully made it to the US, passed quarantine, and has been spayed. She's waiting for her soldier to come home!

The trouble with these animals is that they never tell you where they've been or what they've been doing. My mom's cat disappeared for 6 months in Oakland, CA, but did he ever say what he was up to? Nooo.

I am in love with Major Dennis. Sounds like something I have and would do. I'm a sucker for animals.

@ Nick: There are a few studies linking microchips with an increase in tumor rates - one 2001 study showed that 1% of lab rats developed tumors around their microchips. Everything in life is a tradeoff - I am willing to take the very small risk of my dog developing a tumor around his microchip against the much higher chance that he will be euthanized in a pound if he slips his collar and escapes.
