I can’t really blame the President for the whole not knowing what the NGA does. Just yesterday at a company social event the co-director of my organization sat down next to me and said “So what is it that you do?” I’ve been here for a year and 1/2.

The DEA and ATF (Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives) are both agencies within the Department of Justice.

Hmmm…maybe some operate out of other agency buildings and carry fake badges to throw other spies off their trails…

To make matters more confusing, there was established in 2005, an agency to supervise and coordinate the activities of many of these agencies. This agency, headquartered in northern Virginia, is the Office of the Director of National Intelligence or ODNI. It is headed by Admiral Dennis Blair. Established in a somewhat slapdash manner in response to the perceived failure of the intelligence community to prevent the events of 9/11, the jury is out as to whether this “umbrella” agency has improved the nation’s intelligence capabilities.

The DEA, which is also know as the ATF, is part of the Department of Treasury. My father works for them and his badge says Department of Treasury, same with the building he works at. The only time they wear anything identifying them as a DEA agent or ATF agent is usually on a bust.

The “new” Air Force unit is really just a new name and possibly some reorganization. It was The Air Force Security Service back when I was at the largest listening post in the free world just outside a small town in northern Japan back in the ’70’s.
