Hummingbirds in Slow Motion
by Chris Higgins - June 25, 2009 - 3:58 PM

There are two little hummingbirds outside my window right now. They come for the feeder on a nearby porch (and perhaps for the view of me typing). They’re gorgeous little creatures, but a little on the nervous side — just the sight of someone walking nearby will have them zooming off to the next feeder. So I wondered what they would look like, slowed down? YouTube to the rescue. Prepare to Zen out:

More slow-mo hummingbirds after the jump.

  1. If you’re in S. Florida and you want to see some very relaxed hummingbirds, check out Butterfly World in Coconut Creek. They have the biggest butterfly gardens in the world and they also have a several beautiful aviaries. The hummingbirds there are so tame you can take flash photos from only inches away and they just sit there.

  2. Last week I watched a hummingbird take a bath in a puddle formed in an upturned leaf. The wee bird was really having a great time!

  3. I fell in love with hummingbirds as a kid. It was a dormant kind of love until last year. I was at my friend’s mother house in the central texas farm area and she had three feeders on her porch . At any given time there were at least 10 hummingbirds flitting about and zooming over the top of your head. The coolest part for me was when they would come to rest on a branch on the giant oak tree in front of the porch. They are just so tiny and amazing and they all had very distinct personalities. Now, I wear little silver hummingbird earrings every day.
