Tuesday Turnip

turnip.jpgIt’s time for another whimsical Tuesday Turnip Google search wherein I type a random phrase and we see what kind of interesting factoids “turn-up.”

Inspired by the big news this week, today I decided to type in “famous” + “hanged,” directing me to several sites filled with wonderful info on a bunch of folk who were hung, but chose to do it themselves. (Parents of young children N.B. – If this list is any barometer, don’t let your kids grow up to be rock musicians…)

  • Ray Combs, host of Family Feud
  • David Strickland, Suddenly Susan co-star
  • Ian Curtis, of Joy Division
  • Michael Hutchence, of INXS (hanging or possibly Autoerotic Asphyxiation)
  • Sergei Esenin, Russian poet
  • Tom Evans, of Badfinger
  • Gerard de Nerval, poet and author
  • Peter Ham, of Badfinger
  • Jonathan Brandis, an American actor.
  • Hans Berger, German inventor of electroencephalography
  • Harold Shipman, English doctor, serial killer
  • Phil Ochs, political folksinger
  • Fred West, serial killer
  • Hideto Matsumoto, Japanese rock musician
  • Paul Hester, former drummer of Crowded House
  • Stuart Adamson, former lead singer and guitarist of Big Country

And my personal fav: Ted Kaczynski, who tried (unsuccesfully) to hang himself with his underwear in prison
