A wonderful story. Too bad much of their research falls on deaf, i.e. unintelligent, ears. I have been in positions of similar caliber - no one cares unless it matters to them. At the same time I find much of their work questionable from the simplest point of views.

The Rand Corporation and its relationship with the Aerospace Corporation had another ‘unintentional benefit’ over their normal duties. It saved the life of one of my co-workers.

He was having an affair with a secretary in our office in LA. When her muscular husband found out about it, my buddy narrowly escaped this irate marksman by running over to Aerospace where entry required an ID pass. He took up residence there until things cooled down.

For pete's sake, just because Rand has come up with ideas that were sometimes actually put into use doesn't mean they ''control'' America.

Enough with the conpiracy theory-school of blogging.

Ideas can be useful. Nothing wrong with following up on them, if so.

Mrs. Annis,

RAND has already offered some provocative analysis on the the health care debate. It seems no one wants to listen the though.

Maybe the Rand Corporation could come up with some decent solutions for our healthcare concerns. And why hasnt anyone asked them? And why cant individual states come up with their own plans, like Oregon has? And why is the federal government trying to take over banks, insurance companies, and car companies? And why cant Medicare be expanded rather than all the money to start a new program?

I interviewed for a job at the Rand Corporation in Santa Monica a few years ago. During the day-long interview, I found out that people either work there for about 6 months or forever. It felt like an all or nothing proposition, you loved the place or hated it, depending on your temperament. The main things I remember besides the tenure observation were the delicious Caesar salad I had for lunch, the awesome contemporary art collection the building had which was on long-term loan from Peter Norton (of the Norton Anti-Virus software fame) including a giant snowflake that covered an entire wall of a hallway and the amazing number of clubs and other social activities that the company had, which existed, I believe, to serve as an outlet for all of the incredibly intense and possibly life-altering research conducted and recommendations made by the think tank. Needless to say, I actually felt a bit relieved when I wasn't offered the job. Guess it wasn't in sync with my own temperament!

While RAND may have elaborated on the satellite, the concept, including it's usage in communication, originated with Arthur C. Clarke.

Yep. The technology responsible for the internet started here in the US. And thanks to government bureaucracy and corporate back-scratching, Europe and Japan now have access to better cell networks, high speed internet, transportation, health care, etc, etc....
