Creatures from the Sewer! Reading an explanation of what this is doesn’t make the sewer-cam video any less disturbing.

The debate over US health care is satirized using the analogy of police protection. “Under our system, we can choose our own police officers, as long as we pay for protection out of our own pockets. Do we want some government bureaucrat choosing the police for us?” (via Metafilter)

The Tale of How is a gothic opera about birds menaced by a sea monster. The animation is creepy and beautiful.

  1. I really hope that sewer “creature” is some kind of worms. That thing is nasty and creepy.

  2. Miss C! Congrats on the wedding! So glad to have you back!

  3. Thank you for posting The Tale of How. It is AMAZING!

  4. I don’t really think the police force can be compared to the healthcare system for a situation like that. I could go on, but I won’t…

And bring on the fireworks. It’s July 1st, I’m ready for ‘em!

  5. Miss C,
I am disappointed today. I usually treasure your links, however your choice on to provide this Health care comparison story leaves me downcast. The arguement presented falls into a classic case of the strawman logical fallacy (or an “Aunt Sally” if you are British). The given article provides false attribution without ever addressing how far removed criminal justice (my field) is from the medical field. I hope you reconsider your choice and would enjoy dialoguing with you should you wish.
    Thank you.

  6. Geez, Scott, I just thought it was funny.

  7. The first link isn’t working for me. :(

  8. I got to learn how to drive my granddad’s Model A. It was fun, but it overheated easy.

  9. I am a Mental Floss subscriber and read the website daily. Normally I enjoy the Links very much but I am disappointed in your choice of the police protection/healthcare article. The services provided by the two industries are not comparable in any meaningful way. And the article was not even remotely funny. Do me a favor – stick to trivia and leave your political agenda out of it.

  10. I believe the intention was satire – not political agenda…

  11. Some people just don’t get it. Miss C wasn’t posting her political agendas, she was posting a satire piece that someone else wrote that is very much enjoyable because it points out how absurd some of the arguments against healthcare reform are.

Your silly vendetta against public healthcare that you need to post in the comments, however, is a political agenda.

  12. Hey Miss C,

    Congrats on the wedding!

The first link doesn’t work for me either :( (“Forbidden 403,” whatever that means). The second link is incorrectly cited (it’s Cracked, not Gorilla Mask).

I won’t be finicky about the other ones, sorry to bring up those. Unlike some of the other detractors, I enjoyed this Cup’o'Links! :)

  13. Apparently I was not very astute this morning. My apologies, Miss C.

  14. Anyone who believes the “police protection” site was just satire, and not political preaching, needs some more mentalfloss.

There is a huge difference between police protection and health care; specifically, the “police powers” are enumerated in the U.S. Constitution. The right to “free” Health Care, on the other hand, is not.

  15. The sewer creatures link has been off and on today -I think they are getting a lot of traffic. The “via” link is used to give credit to the source where I found something.
