I think it’s obvious if you’ve seen 1776 that George Read was the only one in the room not supporting independence by the end. When Caesar Rodney gives him a dirty look while announcing “Delaware…by majority vote…votes yea,” it’s awesome.

(Caught the movie on TCM last night, still great.)

Hey! I’m related to George Read!! He signed both the Declaration of Independence AND the Constitution eventually though.

I love the moment when John Witherspoon (finally) arrives in the movie of 1776. He’s played by John Noble, who played the governor in Benson. He makes Witherspoon seem also a little goofy, but then it’s such a relief to everyone when he tells them he’s for Independence.

My favorite signer of the Declaration of Independence is John Morton from whom I am descended. He was also, incidentally, the first to die after signing just a year or so later.
