In honor of the Fourth of July, let’s start with a medley of videos memorializing Fireworks gone wrong.
*
From Sydney, a student at NC State, comes an update on the Barrel Monster story from last week. Best part is the construction company’s consideration that they would like to keep the statue or commission another one!
*
As a serial jerry-rigger, I love this site “There, I fixed it!“, courtesy of Nicole.
*
From ESPN Page 2, Patrick Hruby’s rundown of 10 Hellish pick-up bball players, 2.0. This also rings true for anyone who has ever played in a kickball league or really any kind of (dis)organized park play.
*
Just because you could doesn’t mean you should: introducing the glass ledge on the Sears tower. Not for the faint of heart! I’m not sure I could handle it.
*
An informative tattoo location chart, which should be coupled with, as a follow-up, if tattoos told the truth.
*
Customize your clothing with this 120-zipper dress. It surely can’t be comfortable. I’m also afraid of zippers pinching me, yowza!

*
Fight the good fight … against your own mind! Here are 10 thinking traps that keeps us thinking inside the box.
*
Further ideas on how to train your memory to encode major number systems. Way beyond my brain power!
*
Closer to what I usually spend my time look at: Cats in Sinks! I know this has been around, but every time I stumble on it I can’t help but click… and click … and click … (thanks Sarah!)
*
Two words: baby. panda.
*
If you don’t have access to cuddling a baby panda, how about a cuddly Jabba?
*
Tomato pie, or, how to feed your family for under $10. To learn more about tomatoes, check out this week’s Dietribe.
*
Astronomy picture of the day: Saturn’s moon Enceladus. I can’t decide if it looks like something I want to lick or something really, really old found in my fridge…
*
Too hot to go outside but all done with the Weekend Links? Check out these 10 humor sites from CNN.

  1. For the stoat picture:

Stoat 1: Hey Keith watch me. Look! Look! This is my Ray Charles impersonation!
Stoat 2: *Sigh* I know, Tim. You got drunk last night and showed the whole damned forest your “magic invisible piano.”

  2. You be Morpheus and I’ll be Neo. Ready….GO!

  3. Shazam!

  4. We are out of groceries, again?

  5. Stoat: “Come n get me, baby!”

  6. Stoat: Tom could only stare in awe when Mike showed up on his brand new invisible motorcycle.

  7. I see the force is stong with you my son but can you get up onto the picnic table a get me some cake

  8. “Death from above!!!”

  9. Hello! The term is jury rigger! Egad, get it right! The term you’ve crossed it with is jerry-built. Jury rigging is fixing due to immediate necessity. Jerry building is shoddy workmanship.

  10. According to Merriam Webster either jury rig or jerry rigged appears to be correct. It started out at jury rig but jerry rigged has become acceptable. A lot like “sneaked” and “snuck.” Sneaked was correct but snuck has sneaked into our lexicon. And so it goes with this term.

    ju·ry–rig
    Function: transitive verb
    Etymology: 2jury
    Date: 1788
: to erect, construct, or arrange in a makeshift fashion

    Main Entry: jer·ry–rigged
    Function: adjective
Etymology: probably blend of jerry-built and jury-rigged
    Date: 1959
: organized or constructed in a crude or improvised manner

  11. Oh, and have to say, the glass ledges on the Sears Tower are not for me! The THOUGHT of them makes me anxious and lightheaded!

  12. Jury rig and jerry rigged are now used interchangeably according to Merriam-Webster. Jury rig is the older tem, and jerry rigged came along later and eventually became acceptable. Another case of incorrect use becoming acceptable.

  13. Sorry for the double post on word usage. It didn’t post right away!

  14. Listen Peter I really don’t want to see your vasectomy scar even if you did do it yourself so stop jumping

  15. Ha, love the captions guys, thanks!

Also thanks for backing me up, Hyacinth. I did actually look up the difference. I think I say jury and mean jerry. When you type it you suddenly think to examine the phrase …
