I've often wondered why Habitat for Humanity doesn't rehab some homes that are vacant. I'm sure the price tags on these are prohibitive, but with so many moderately priced homes on the market, why build new?

I agree with the above comments. How greedy and delusional are some people to still expect to sell some of these fancy monstrosities for millions when so many Americans can't afford to keep a roof over their heads? I hope these properties bleed them dry and the local governments put those property taxes to good use. Scrap these McMansions and use the material to house families who will appreciate a safe, cozy home.

I, too, wish that the homes pictured could be divided up into properties and sold. Unfortunately, the legal realities - not only issues of ownership, but building code, accessibility codes, etc - would be a huge hurdle. that, plus the necessary costs of upgrading them to Fair Housing compliance, re-plumbing, re-wiring, if necessary. The costs would be prohibitive.

I agree with nikkinoodle. With all of the homeless people in this country it really is a shame to see all of these empty houses going to waste.

It sure would be nice to see some of these fancy unused homes divided up and rented out to people that need a place to live in this economy.
