by Sandy Wood - July 9, 2009 - 7:30 AM

THE ANSWER: X.

These are the six letters of the English alphabet which, when pronounced out loud, begin with a short “e” sound: EF, EL, EM, EN, ES, and EKS.

  1. I got this one, but I think it was more luck then anything. F is the 6th letter in the alphabet and L is 6 letters from F. L M N are all one letter apart, but S is five letters away so I figured it must be a pattern and X is five letters from S so I thought that would be the answer.

  2. hurray :) i figured it out (though only with the help of the title ‘can i buy a vowel’) … oh well, i’ll take the win :)

  3. Interesting, I actually came with T once I realized I had seen the other 5 letters somewhere – “Mental Floss.” Remove all vowels and the consonants remaining are FLMNST, in alphabetical order.

  4. I thought it was “T” and you were naming all the consonents in “Mental Floss”

    Oh well…

  5. I didn’t get it, but the “English Alphabet” should have given it away. Oh well!

  6. I’m with you Andy M and Craig. \T\ popped out as soon as i looked at the list.

  7. Haha this was a fun one. Although I guess I also found the comments funny seeing as the site has everyone already thinking of MentalFloss as the answer.

  8. I came up with X the same way that Matt Allcorn did.
