I knew 3 and 4 before — but I am fascinated by this woman and read all about her so I appreciate the exposure to new info! She is truly one of the world’s beauties, esp. when you consider that she was part of the era before the plastic surgery that most celebs now have undergone.

True what poster Melissa said — Grace was undervalued by her family and she strove her whole life to get their attention.

I had read that she was an overachiever and did all she could to win her father’s approval. When asked for reaction on his daughter having won the Best Actress Oscar, he responded with something off the cuff about (am paraphrasing here) “I always thought her sister would be the one to win such an award.” What a jerk.

Just because you have an athletic family doesn’t mean you have a tendency towards athleticism.

My dad is a fantastic mechanic, for example, and my mom is a stellar nurse. I can add gas to the car and put on a band-aid and that’s about it.

Actually, not being terribly athletic sort of set Grace apart from the rest of her family. Unlike the rest of the family, Grace didn’t participate as heavily in athletic pursuits, as she apparently suffered from chronic allergies and sinus infections as a child. Her family, particularly her father, didn’t understand her desire to play with her dolls and play dress-up instead of playing rough-and-tumble with her siblings. In fact, he was shocked when she became successful in her career, saying something like, “Of all my children, Grace is the last one I would have ever thought would support me in my old age!” Though she was a star and icon to the rest of the world, to Jack Kelly, it seems she was always sort of the “runt of the litter”.

Go figure.

One more addition – my in-laws visit Ocean City New Jersey every year and it never fails that someone points out the beach house that Grace Kelly’s family used to own. It is easily the biggest place in town and is an absolute palace.

She was just a beautiful woman – even in her advancing years. I, being only 9 or 10 at the time, didn’t know who she was, but I seem to remember my parents watching the coverage of the funeral (or news coverage). I’ll never forget my fathers comments when my mother left the room. Next to Elizabeth Taylor, Grace Kelly was simply the most beautiful woman ever to grace this fine planet. From the pics I have seen, I wouldn’t doubt it (even though it is hard for me to picture Liz T as a beautiful young woman).
