Vanity Fair takes an in-depth look at pearls, the only precious gem manufactured by living beings. They’ve been prized for thousands of years, but may be in trouble in the present.

  1. Hmmm… I guess amber wouldn’t count as a “precious gem” although it is produced by a living being (trees).

  2. OUTSTANDING LINKS THIS MORNING! Possibly the best collection I’ve seen.

  3. Any man who proposes in a public setting, whether it be at your family’s Christmas dinner or on a JumboTron seriously deserves a punch in the face. How humiliating to be put on the spot like that even if she does say yes. My best friend’s ex proposed to her at HIS family reunion, which was the first time she met them. They were dating for about a year. I mean wow…, LOL.

  4. Awesome article on pearls! It answered quite a few questions I’ve had for a while. As always, thanks!

  5. The _Time_ article, on self-help through negative thinking was interesting, and it linked to another one on facing death, but it was a reminder how short and shallow _Time_ has become. Mental Floss has way more depth, detail, and news and it isn’t even technically a news site.

  6. Don’t even put links like that smut for negative thinking. I can find a study somewhere that backs up anything. Telling people to think negatively is akin to spitting in a bums face in my book. There’s just no need for it no matter what the situation
