Brain Game: One More Time

Yes, today’s Brain Game is really just a Q-and-A, but I thought it would be a nice way to start the week since the second half of the Major League Baseball season is now underway. And it may take some noggin doggin’ to come up with the answer if you don’t know it right away. Good luck!

Since the Cincinnati Reds and their “Big Red Machine”
back in 1975 and 1976, only TWO Major League Baseball teams
have won consecutive World Series championships.

As you might guess, one of these teams is the New York Yankees,
who took titles in 1977-1978 and again in 1998-1999-2000.

Name the other team.

Here is the ANSWER.

  1. Hey, look, a sports trivia question I knew.

Those series happened while I was in high school, and I remember our English teacher had the only classroom in the building that had a cable TV hookup, and we’d sit in class and watch the afternoon AL games. And the principals would find suspicious reasons to stop by the room.

  2. Great, Jacquilynne.

Whenever doing sports-related questions, I try to focus on the teams, franchises, and championships more than individual players. That makes things more fair for folks who don’t watch games but keep up with the standings and the championships. For most sports, there seem to be as many of those people (if not more) than there are devout fans.

  3. I seem to remember those world series games all being played in primetime–being a rare fan of the winning team, I remember them well, especially the final game of the 2nd WS.

  4. 1992 and 1993 are what keep me watching Blue Jays baseball to this day. The hope that I’ll one day be able to feel as good as I did watching Joe Carter’s ball go over the fence in game 6 against the Phillies keeps me going. On a fun trivial note, Joe Carter was the last player to have contact with the Ball in both series; hitting the walkoff homerun in 1993 and catching Mike Timiln’s throw to first off of Otis Nixon’s bunt in 1992. For these and other achievments he finds his name enscribed on the Rogers Centre’s “Level of Excellence”. Go Jays!

  5. Wow, a sports questions I actually knew the answer to! Maybe it’s because I live in Toronto…. but I didn’t at the time. It was still a big deal where I was though.

  6. Did we forget the 1972-1973-1974 Oakland A’s?

  7. Sorry, I see I missed “since” in the question. My bad.

  8. It’s a shame that some dynasties can’t last, be it due to bad luck or a curse, but I would’ve loved to have seen the Cubs romp the Tigers in 1907 and 1908.

  9. The world series games were played in prime time, but the AL games weren’t. It being a Canadian team, the network thought it wouldn’t draw ratings in the early series, so they scheduled them in the afternoon.

Being Canadians, we watched them anyway.

  10. What about the Red Sox — 1915 & 1916? Did i misunderstand the question?
