The Art of Missed Connections
by Mangesh Hattikudur - July 22, 2009 - 1:54 PM

My wife Lizzie turned me on to this blog by Brooklyn artist Sophie Blackall. Sophie scans the missed connections section of Craigslist for inspiration, then illustrates the ones she digs. The artwork’s really charming, and there’s a certain pleasure in reading the sweet and bizarre messages that people leave one another in the hopes that a glance on the subway platform or a look in the park will translate into something more. I’ve posted a few of her pieces below, but be sure to check out her gallery here.

If not for your noisy Tambourine, I would not have seen you.
Your green skirt looked terrible, but that leather jacket makes you look just right.
I was the attractive guy sitting to your left just before you got off.

Remember? Uptown A train. Sunday at around 9pm. I was the black dude reading Bukowski’s Post Office. You were reading the Arts and Leisure section. You passed wind rather loudly and started chuckling. I’d like to see you again. The flatulence wasn’t a turn-off.

  1. The illustrations are lovely and look like art prints you can purchase. I’m really impressed at how well the artist interprets the message, since she just picks them off of Craigslist.

  2. Reading the Missed Connections in Craiglist never fails to amuse me.

  3. Wonderful illustrations. I like them very much.

Mental Floss: what a great website. How else would I find all these gret things?

  4. It’d be interesting to know how many of these (if any) ever work. Kind of creepy-romantic if you ask me.

  5. I’ve been doing the same basic art series since June 2007. It’s a very fun project to do. Instead of illustration, I use photography. My series can be seen here: http://give-me-wings.deviantart.com
Strange to know others are catching on.

  6. this is fantastic! such beautiful art for such a fleeting moment in time. Thanks mentalfloss (or as my mom calls it…mindthread)
