Olmstead (with the help of Calvert Vaux, his partner in the design of NYC's Central Park) was also responsible for the design of the nation's first planned residential suburb, Riverside, IL, less than 10 miles west/southwest of downtown Chicago--3 miles south of Frank Lloyd Wright's Oak Park and also home to a handful of FLW's designed homes. Like Olmstead's parks, FLW incorporated existing surrounding nature into all of his designs--to incorporate and have his designs complemented by what was already there (ex. building around a tree rather than remove it).

I just went to the Biltmore House today, and like Bill said above, he did that, and the grounds are gorgeous. The painting of him shown is in the House, too.

So revered was Olmstead's design at Cherokee Park in Louisville, that when I-64 was built through the city, they dug a tunnel under it, so not to disrupt the tranquility of the park!

There's a famous story in my local area that Olmsted was deeply influenced by birkenhead park, the first public park in britain, when he was designing central park.
