Unlike now, it used to be unfashionable to look excessively brown as it was considered (accurately) a peasant characteristic. The victorians were famous for pictures of the dead. The little boy that you said was an evil twin looks like he is dead with his eyes maybe painted over to make it appear he is alive in the photo.Either that or he was really angry. One of the girls in the sofa chair thing looked like she was sick by the way her eyes looked. The children are beautiful but are all of them alive in the photos.
