Last week, we declared that the Laurel Hill Hoboes had the best high school nickname/mascot/logo combination. (A close second: the Chinook Sugar Beeters.) We invited readers to try to top these memorable logos, and try to top them you did. Here are 27 pretty great ones, followed by our two favorite submissions.

1. Huntington Beach Oilers (Huntington Beach, California); 2. Fisher Bunnies (Fisher, Illinois); 3. Avon Old Farms Winged Beavers (Avon, Connecticut)
4. Blooming Prairie Awesome Blossoms (Blooming Prarie, Minnesota); 5. Poca Dots (Poca, West Virginia); 6. Orofino Maniacs (Orofino, Idaho)

7. Camas Papermakers (Camas, Washington); 8. Hesston Swathers (Hesston, Kansas)

9. Hickman Kewpies (Columbia, Missouri); 10. Coalinga Horned Toads (Coalinga, California); 11. Richland Bombers (Richland, Washington)

12. Astoria Fighting Fishermen (Astoria, Oregon); 13. Mitchell Kernels (Mitchell, South Dakota); 14. Williamsport Millionaires (Williamsport, Pennsylvania)

15. Kaukauna Galloping Ghosts (Kaukauna, Wisconsin); 16. Ridgefield Spudders (Ridgefield, Washington)

17. Johnson Atom Smashers (Savannah, Georgia)

18. New Braunfels Unicorns (New Braunfels, Texas); 19. Live Oak Acorns (Morgan Hill, California); 20. Lockport Porters (Lockport, Illinois)

21.Hoopeston Area Cornjerkers (Hoopeston, Illinois); 22. Frankfort Hot Dogs (Frankfort, Indiana); 23. Watersmeet Nimrods (Watersmeet, Michigan)

24. New Berlin Pretzels (New Berlin, Illinois); 25. Vintage Crushers (Napa, California)

26. Yuba City Honkers (Yuba City, California); 27. Chattanooga Central Purple Pounders (Harrison, Tennessee)
But since we have to play favorites, here are the two logos we’d love to see on a hat or t-shirt or license plate cover:

The Rocky Ford Meloneers (Rocky Ford, Colorado), submitted by johnlaf.

And finally, the Centralia High School Orphans (boys teams) & Annies (girls teams), submitted by Kathleen & Tom.
Thanks to everyone for all the great suggestions. Honorable mention goes to the Arkansas School for the Deaf Leopards, which is undeniably brilliant—I just couldn’t find a good picture of the logo.
Update: Here’s their scoreboard, courtesy of Nanook of the South…

And does it make it funnier that Avon Old Farms is an all boys boarding high school with the mascot of the winged beavers? And that they pronounce it wing-ed?

My high school used to play Avon Old Farms in sports. Trinity-Pawling School in Pawling, NY has since changed their mascot to the Pride (a lion is the mascot) but twelve years ago we were the Blazers (like the jacket that I had to wear every day to class). No visual mascot existed but on paper we were the Blazers. A contest was started by the school newspaper to make an image of the blazer (some submissions were a drawing of said jacket, others were of a horse). None of the ideas really stuck and most students were happier not really aknowleging the mascot.

My High School mascot was pretty unique and I frequently get teased about it even being out of high school since 2003. We were the Norwalk Truckers. Our logo was a massive semi-truck smiling at people. We also had one where the word norwalk became the “trailer” of the semi with the cab in front of the N.

Okay, if you’re going to mention the Itasca Wampus Cats then you have to mention the Conway (Arkansas) Wampus Cats because they went so far as to describe a wampus cat. It has six legs “four to run at the speed of light and two to fight with all its might”. There is a statue in the high school…our quiz bowl team posed with it and took pictures while we were there at a NAQT tourney.
I CAN’T BELIEVE I DIDN’T THINK OF THIS EARLIER!!!
The Cave City (Arkansas) Cavemen and Cavewomen and the Harrison (Arkansas) Goblins. The funny part of that being when I saw a person wearing a Harrison shirt that read “Go Gobs”

The Alva Goldbugs
The Beaver Dusters (It bore repeating.)
The Beggs Demons (in Beggs, OK.)
The Blackwell Maroons
The Broken Bow Savages (Broken Bow is a city. So is Broken Arrow.)
The Chickasha Fighting Chicks
The Claremore Zebras
The Clinton Red Tornadoes
The Dewey Bulldoggers (Interestingly, this is not a dog. Their logo shows a cowboy jumping from his horse and grabbing the horns of a bull to take it to the ground.)
The Duncan Demons (Possessed donuts?)

The Elk City Elk
The Enid Plainsmen
The Eufaula Ironheads
The Grove Ridgerunners (MEEP MEEP!)
The Haskell Haymakers
The Hooker Bulldogs (Honest to God,Hooker High School is in Hooker, OK. We also have Howe High School in Howe, OK.)

The Little Axe Indians (Little Axe High School is in Norman, OK, the home of OU.)
The MacArthur Highlanders (There can be only one!)
The Marlow Outlaws
The Miami Wardogs (This is a bulldog dressed like Rambo, complete with ammo belt . . . and a sword and shield. And it’s Mi-AM-uh, not Mi-AM-ee.)
The Midwest City High School Bombers (Exactly what you want to hear in a school, especially after Oklahoma City!)
The Mill Creek Bullfrogs
The Muskogee Roughers (Another bulldog, dressed as a oil rig worker, called a “roughneck.”)
The Mustang Broncos (Mustang is the city. Redundant, no?)
The Newcastle Racers
The Paoli Pugs
The Perry Maroons
The Picher Gorillas (It’s funnier with the real pronunciation: PEEK-er.)
The Prue Rockets
The Sallisaw Black Diamonds (with nary a ski slope in sight.)
The Sand Springs Sandites
The Sharon-Mutual Trojans (in Mutual, OK. If you don’t get this one . . .)
The Silo Rebels
The Southmoore Sabercats
In Tulsa:
The Bishop Kelley Comets
The Daniel Webster Warriors (It’s not actually weird, but the name makes me picture someone getting brained with an unabridged dictionary!)
The Holland Hall Fighting Dutchmen
The Will Rogers Ropers (Again, not really weird, but a cool tribute.)
The Valliant Bulldogs (in Valliant, OK.)
The Woodward Boomers
The Yukon Millers (A apron-wearing guy with a sack of flour.)
The Beaver Dusters just beat Hooker 57-8. Oklahoma wins. I live for hearing national broadcasters butcher the names of Oklahoma athletes’ hometowns. My favorite? The Oologah-Talala School System.

Mighty Fighting Unicorn Band alum here! The funniest part is that our mascot was supposed to be a griffin as taken from the town crest, but whoever drew the mascot was either drunk (so says the legend) or a terrible artist, so we were stuck with the Unicorn instead of the fearsome Griffin.
Awesome to find out there’s another poor high school burdened with the mascot somewhere in Ohio.

So, seeing as I am an Orphan alumni, I found some of the comments regarding the origin of my school’s mascot to be silly, and some slightly insulting.. We got our name from a 1922 silent movie “Orphans of the Storm”.. This was the favorite movie of a coach we had in the 1940′s, Arthur L. Trout..
but yes, you dont think about how weird of a name your mascot is, until you wear a tshirt of school pride “go orphans” in public in an area which doesnt know thats your hs mascot.. it sometimes insults people.. :s

I live in Centralia, Illinois and graduated in 2008. I would like to correct a few misconceptions and to expand on a few explanations.
First, the Orphans name has nothing to do with the coal fire in Washington, nor the coal mine explosion in Illinois. (Although I do find it strange that two towns named Centralia have had coal related disasters. It also has nothing to do with A.L.Trout’s favorite movie.
In response to the couple of people who claim they are from Centralia, yet claim the mascot is lame, you should be ashamed. For many years, the team was “the winningest high school basketball team in the nation” until they were surpassed in 2006.
As noted by whittier, the team got its name from its early uniforms. They were old and mismatched and their opposing teams often remarked that they looked like orphans. The name quickly caught on, and mostly in spite of the comments, it was made the official team name. There is even a special area where the most dedicated Orphans fans sit called the “OrFANage.”

Other weird high school teams:
Moorhead Spuds (Moorhead)
Hawley Nuggets (Hawley, MN)
Detroit Lakes Lakers (Detroit Lakes, MN)
West Fargo Packers (West Fargo, ND)
NDSU Bison (College, Fargo)
Fergus Falls Otters (Fergus Falls, MN)
Wauban Bombers* (Wauban, MN)
*Not sure if it’s still bombers
Valley City Hiliners (Valley City, ND**)
**Got to try Pizza Corner 502 2nd St East or available in area frozen pizza sections
East Grand Forks Green Wave (East Grand Forks, ND)
Fosston Greyhounds (Fosston, MN)
Bagley Flyers (Bagley, MN)
Cook Squirrels*** (Cook, MN)
***I believe they are merging with the Orr school. 20 miles between towns, Orr school has a lot of room from what I know, but they’re building a new school. Orr by the way, is the Braves.
This one isn’t weird either but my alma mater is the DILWORTH-GLYNDON-FELTON REBELS!!!!!!!!!!!!

Not sure what a Hiliner is. Moorhead, obviously is a potato (black and orange potato for that matter) Bison have been making NCAA Tournaments for three years, and the football team was a quarterfinalist this fall in the FCS. Finish at #9 after Eastern Washington wins the national championship over Deleware. Yes EW beat the Thundering Herd.
(NDSU even had it’s own near disasterous plane crash, just like Marshall’s Thundering Herd back in the 70s. The basketball team crashed near Sioux Falls, but everyone lived.

The Freeburg Midgets. Freeburg, Illinois. Kind of in the same region as the Centralia Orphans, actually.
My school’s mascot for a long time was just the Maroons. No picture, no mascot costume. Just everything associated with the school was maroon. A few years ago the student body voted on a new mascot. (We would keep the maroon part, but we’d be the Maroon Somethings.) The students chose “Maroon Devils” which is what the mascot originally was a very, very long time ago. (It was changed due to complaints from local churches.) The votes were then thrown out the window and the school went with what the football coach wanted, the Maroon Pride, (as in a pride of lions.) Then they put flames on the football helmets. Flames. Pride. Thus began a never-ending series of gay jokes from students of rival schools. -_-
