Cahokia, the ancient city on the Mississippi where St. Louis is now, flourished in the 12th century and was an center of commerce. Archaeologists are also finding evidence of human sacrifice, which flies in the face of conventional wisdom about Native Americans.
*
Seven unconventional uses for heavy construction equipment. The human operator is doing the job, just in an awesomely massive and powerful way.
*
If you enjoyed WTF Taxidermy, you’ll also like Crappy Taxidermy. Some items are art pieces and some are just plain bad.
*
An atmosphere made of titanium oxide? The Kepler Space Telescope is showing us how very different planets outside our solar system can be.
*
The World’s Weirdest Ice Cream Flavors. Cucumber with Cayenne seems to be the most normal of the list.
*
Translation Party is where you can type in an English phrase and have it translated into Japanese and back again, several times until it gets as funny as it can be. I tried “The spirit is willing but the flesh is weak“. (via the Presurfer)
*
Anamanaguchi is a rock band that uses an 8-bit Nintendo game player as just another instrument. Rock on, geeks!

4 Things You Didn’t Know About Johnny Appleseed. Like the real reason he planted all those trees in the first place.

  1. The link to Anamanaguchi is incorrect.

    It should be http://www.collegehumor.com/video:1918514

not video:1918007 which is “Hardly working Poker”….

Or you can just click the second video in the playlist on the left of the page that pops up. I watched this short clip and just kept wondering where the 8 bits came in!

  2. Love the translator! I tried Hamlet’s “But in that sleep of death what dreams may come” and got “However, you may be the death of dreams during sleep.” Then I remembered that it’s actually “FOR in that sleep…” I tried that and got several good ones:

-For death, dreams may come during sleep
-Death can be a dream in his sleep
-You can sleep in a dream of his death

  3. Many of you have come to me wondering why there isn’t anymore bacon flavored ice cream. Unfortunately, it is because a horse ate way too much of it and now looks like a planet. That very same horse tends to heat up to a point 1400 degrees hotter than it’s “dark side” and has an atmosphere of titanium oxide.

You, I tend to eat a bacon-flavored ice cream with no good reason. Unfortunately, after the horse is eating like a planet, it is. Also, the horse “in an atmosphere of dark side, titanium oxide,” Fahrenheit 140 is easy to point to the heat.

and the final point, in which it put the quotations around the comma…

You and I, in many cases, bacon, eat ice cream flavored with good reason. Sadly, after the horses are eating like a planet, it is. The dark side, the horse of titanium oxide in the atmosphere “,” Fahrenheit 140 is easy to point to the heat.

  4. sorry for double post…but wow.

  5. now i broke it. (last post, i’m having way too much fun with it)

  6. Some of that crappy taxidermy is just scary! What kind of mind thinks like that?!

  7. I broke Translation Party with “I am the walrus.” It just kept spitting out various combinations of “I Odobenus rosmarus,” whatever that means.

  8. Translation party is going to keep me very busy today. Hilarious. I typed in “Imagination is more important than knowledge.” And it translated equally the first time.

Then, just for the hell of it, I typed in “What would Jesus do?” and the final translation was “Yes?”

  9. I typed several phrases, but the “I am the Way, the Truth and the Life” ended with “I am living truth.” Still somewhat the same thing.

That is a definite time waster!

  10. “It is a far, far better thing that I do, than I have ever done; it is a far, far better rest that I go to, than I have ever known.”

    became in the translator:

“So far more than I know, I am the past, I recommend the left.”

  11. I have the College Humor link corrected now, thanks!

The funniest translation I’ve seen so far is here:

  12. BUAHAHAHAHA!!

Buffalo Buffalo buffalo buffalo buffalo buffalo Buffalo buffalo

BAFFAROBAFFARO is BAFFAROBAFFARO BAFFAROBAFFARO buffalo buffalo

  13. Wow, Translation Party is going to take up most of my day too. I’m finding Mitch Hedberg jokes are difficult to translate into Japanese. “My fake plants died because I did not pretend to water them.” ended up as “I have not played in the death Wednesday of a fake plant.”

HTF did Wednesday get in there?

  14. Dolly Madison’s favorite ice cream flavor was OYSTER. They were more experimental in those days.

last one for me today. Thank you Miss C. you’ve yet again helped me through another day of work.

  16. “To be or not to be. That is the question.” became “Please. This is a good question.”

  17. Try the translation party with…

    Very interesting!

  18. A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush…. leads to…..Two birds with one hand, the value of President Bush
