(a.) I don't have an Ikea anywhere near me, nor have I ever been to an Ikea, though I'm entertaining the idea of going to one located about 90 miles away from me, just to see what the experience is like.

(b.) You can achieve sturdiness from kit furniture. It'll just take a whole lot of effort to assemble the furniture. I have an office chair I purchased in 2004 that took me hours to assemble, but aside from a slight tilt forward it's developed throughout the years (which resulted from a move and negiglbly affects the comfort level of the chair) it's remained sturdy and fairly comfortable.

(c.) I don't know if I'd go so far as to buy a kit bed, however. Sure, if it's your first apartment and you're looking for cheaper furnishings. But I have found that the investment I made in solid wood bedroom furniture is paying off in dividends. My bedroom furniture was subject to the same careless movers who caused the slight tilt to appear in my office chair (among some other dings and dents and a ruined boombox), but my bedroom furniture is as sturdy as ever. Sturdy enough, I think, to last at least another 50 years.

I thought you would have mentioned the 2007? Catalogue that came out...when you opened the front flap it showed a family on a couch with a VERY happy dog. The front page was quickly replaced on the in-store catalogues but all of those mailed out still had the picture!

We have a furniture repair shop & we fix lots of their junk.

Nazis huh? That explains why sitting in their wooden chairs is such torture. At least Mom doesn't have to tell you to "sit up straight." No other choice :O)

Seriously most "flat pack furniture" is very uncomfortable. And not very strong.

The best wood furniture comes from unfinished furniture stores. Most of it is made in the USA.

We moved from a 1400-sq-ft apartment to a 2200-sq-ft house last year, and suddenly realized we had a lot more rooms than furniture to fill them. I got almost everything I needed on one $800 trip. Kitchen island, chairs for the living room, a half-dozen of the $8 LACK chairs, floor lamps, all kinds of stuff. I haven't had any serious issues with assembly or quality, and I've bought a lot of stuff there over the years. I love my $20 FLARKE bookcase ;)

IKEA has some good stuff, and a lot of cheap stuff. Shelves and storage seam reasonable, but I think I'll keep the 50+ year old sofa I have. It's been recovered once, but structurally is far superior to anything IKEA sells. As for "modern styles" most of it looks like the stuff I grew up with in the 1950s and '60s. Good food in the cafeteria though.

It should be known that Ikea does have some solid wood products in addition to the other "particle board" products that they typically have. I bought a new 55 inch flat screen tv that I hung on my wall like a picture and was therefore searching for a very low profile black cabinet. I did not want particle board but at the same time I did not want to spend a lot after having dropped over $3K on the tv...so I did an internet search and found this one from Ikea. It is solid pine...black...beautiful and very solid. I am extremely happy with it! It's about 55 inches wide and did take close to an hour to assemble but wasn't too bad.

Israeli artist Guy Ben Ner made a really cool video entirely shot in three different IKEA branches (he didn't have the permission to shoot so he was forced to move all the time...), about the nuclear family as a financial unit.

I have Ikea furniture that is 13 years old, and the chairs have held up nicely under a 350 pound man.....their furniture has outlasted JYSK, and quite a few other brands in this house.....I love Ikea and have had nothing but good quality.
