As a lover of Sesame Street, and not a believer of the Bert and Ernie gays rumors, they, however, are not helping that rumor with their Bert and Ernie’s Great Adventure intro. It involves Ernie jumping onto Bert’s bed, flying out the window, pretending to be cowboys, and then pirates. They really could have found a better way…

At a Muppets retrospective I asked Jane Henson about the “Muppets” name and she did say that it was a combo of “marionette” and “puppet.”

Kermit used to do the weather report for Channel 5 in Washington, DC, circa 1960. Around the same time, one or two early Muppets were in commercials for Wilkens Coffee; a brand local to MD and DC, I believe.

Mr. Hooper was my first childhood experience with death, and I remember sitting on my grandmother’s livingroom floor, watching the episode, and feeling the giant, sore lump in my throat and burning tears for the first time. When I watch now with my niece and nephew, I wonder whether the other human characters will be on the show until their own very ends.

I just find it sad that people would get into a tizzy over the idea of an HIV positive muppet. I think it would be an effective tool with which to teach tolerance and responsibility. Sadly it seems the preference is to have children enamored with a muppet that baby talks and refers to himself in the third person.
