Joe...you wrote a terrific article on one of my favorite subjects. Many congrats.

I hope you don't mind if I mention there is a website for Muppet fans who've grown up: http://www.toughpigs.com/

Kermit used to do the weather report for Channel 5 in Washington, DC, circa 1960. Around the same time, one or two early Muppets were in commercials for Wilkens Coffee; a brand local to MD and DC, I believe.

Mr. Hooper was my first childhood experience with death, and I remember sitting on my grandmother's livingroom floor, watching the episode, and feeling the giant, sore lump in my throat and burning tears for the first time. When I watch now with my niece and nephew, I wonder whether the other human characters will be on the show until their own very ends.

I just find it sad that people would get into a tizzy over the idea of an HIV positive muppet. I think it would be an effective tool with which to teach tolerance and responsibility. Sadly it seems the preference is to have children enamored with a muppet that baby talks and refers to himself in the third person.

I, too, have a Muppet obsession. Go to the Experience Music Project (EMP) in Seattle; there is a Henson exhibit and you can actually perform with Muppets! My husband and I drove cross-country this summer, not for the sole purpose of going to EMP, but it was WELL worth the drive!

How about whether or not Bert was based on the actor Ed Dodson? He played Howard Sprague on the Andy Griffith show. There is definitely a resemblance.
