TV Land recently released its list of the 100 greatest catchphrases in TV history. A few observations:

  • 6 are from Saturday Night Live
  • “Hey Hey Hey!” is on the list twice. One is from “Fat Albert.” Can you remember where other comes from? Check the list for the answer.
  • “Heh heh” is all Beavis and Butthead had to say to make the list.
  • Dan Aykroyd is on the list twice for “Wild and crazy guys” and “Jane, you ignorant slut,” both from SNL.
  • William Shatner is also on the list twice. Once for “Denny Crane” and once for “Space, the final frontier.”
  • 10 of the catchphrases are from commercials.

Check out the rest of the list.

  1. I was going to add, “Just the facts, ma’am,” but then I found out (on Snopes) it wasn’t the actual line!

Maybe this comment belongs in the popular misconceptions thread…

  2. I can’t believe “What’s up Doc,” or “That’s all folks,” from the Looney Tunes wasn’t on the list.

  3. Dang, I can think of 100 phrases from Beavis & Butthead alone that will stay forever in my heart. I mean, in my butt.

  4. Cute, but in order to qualify as a “catch phrase” doesn’t that phrase have to be repeated at least once, preferrably hundreds of times? I mean, if that’s true, why is “One small step for (a) man” or “Ask not what your country can do for you” or “Have you no sense of decency” etc. on the list? I don’t think they truly qualify as a “catch phrase” like, say, “Dyn-o-mite” or “Heeeres’ Johnny!” which we heard again and again and again and again…

  5. “Boullions and boullions of stars…

    Carl Sagan

  6. Dear Condom-leeza,
Thanks for calling me cute; you are definitely in the majority there. And I’m unaffected by your nit-pickishness. In your face.

    ~ Amanda (very cute)
